Extratropical Low‐Frequency Variability With ENSO Forcing: A Reduced‐Order Coupled Model Study

چکیده
The impact of the El Ni\~no-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on extratropics is investigated in an idealized, reduced-order model that has a tropical and extratropical module. Unidirectional ENSO forcing used to mimick atmospheric bridge between tropics extratropics. variability coupled ocean-atmosphere module then through analysis its pullback attractors (PBAs). This focuses two types generated by module, one periodic other aperiodic. For substantial range forcing, chaotic PBAs are found coexist for same set parameter values. Different low-frequency associated with either PBA over ranges explored. coexisting exhibit only weak nonlinear instability. though, they quite unstable certain perturbations induce transitions PBAs. These distinct stability properties may have profound consequences climate predictions: particular, ensemble averaging no longer help isolate signal.

The Impact of Extratropical Atmospheric Variability on ENSO: Testing the Seasonal Footprinting Mechanism Using Coupled Model Experiments
Previous studies suggest that extratropical atmospheric variability influences the tropics via the seasonal footprinting mechanism (SFM), in which fluctuations in the North Pacific Oscillation (NPO) impact the ocean via surface heat fluxes during winter and the resulting springtime subtropical SST anomalies alter the atmosphere–ocean system over the tropics in the following summer, fall, and wi...
متن کاملThe ENSO effect on the tropical Atlantic variability: A regionally coupled model study
[1] A CGCM is used to study the relative roles played by local air-sea interaction and remote ENSO effects on the tropical Atlantic interannual variability. A regional coupling strategy allows full air-sea coupling only over the Atlantic Ocean north of 30!S. Two experiments were conducted, respectively with either climatological or real time boundary conditions prescribed over the uncoupled por...
متن کاملThe Response of a Coupled Model of ENSO to Observed Estimates of Stochastic Forcing
In this work the role that observed intraseasonal atmospheric variability may play in controlling and maintaining ENSO variability is examined. To this end, an asymptotically stable intermediate coupled model of El Niño– Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is forced with observed estimates of stochastic forcing, which are defined to be the part of the atmospheric variability that is apparently independ...
متن کاملContrasting Indian Ocean SST variability with and without ENSO influence: A coupled atmosphere-ocean GCM study
In this study, we perform experiments with a coupled atmosphere-ocean general circulation model (CGCM) to examine ENSO’s influence on the interannual sea-surface temperature (SST) variability of the tropical Indian Ocean. The control experiment includes both the Indian and Pacific Oceans in the ocean model component of the CGCM (the Indo-Pacific Run). The anomaly experiment excludes ENSO’s infl...
